Softball Drops Two to League-Leading Alvernia

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Softball (9-11, 9-11) dropped both ends of ta home doubleheader to the league-leading Alvernia University Golden Wolves. The Eagles took a game off Alvernia in the first day of the series to start the month, but the Eastern offense was unable to stage a rally against either of the Alvernia starters.

Eastern tallied six hits off game one starter Reilly Shields, but only one of those, Sami Britton's single down the third base line to start the first, came with less than two outs. Lexi Evelyn had two hits and the only extra-base hit of the game, but Shields worked around danger and did not allow a run as the Golden Wolves scored nine runs against four Eastern pitchers to end the game an inning early. Shields picked up her ninth win without a loss on the year.

Lauren Lofland was a strike away from getting out of danger with minimal damage in the  top of the first in the nightcap, but a bases-clearing double put the Golden Wolves up 4-0 before the Eagles came to the plate.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but the entire rally happened with two outs, and a strike out ended it. The Eagles put two more runners on with two outs in the second, but again could not take advantage with two runners in scoring position.

After Alvernia picked up another run on  a lead-off home run in the third, The Eagles again put a runner on with a Susana Perez single to lead-off the bottom of the inning. Eastern had two more hits in the fourth and another hit in the fifth.

The Eagles put a runner on in the sixth and had the bases loaded in the seventh, but each time, Alvernia starter Ally Decker worked out of trouble to stifle the Eastern attack.

The Eagles have a non-league series against DeSales University scheduled for next weekend and have four games against Hood that may or may not be scheduled. At this point, the Eagles currently sit fifth in the MAC Commonwealth standings. If nothing changes, and it likely could, the Eagles would be slated to play Messiah in the first round.
