Durning Hits GB Mark as Men's Lacrosse Wins

ANNVILLE, Pa.- With 12 more ground balls today, Chris Durning broke the oldest career record in program history, and Eastern University Men's Lacrosse overcame a slow start to beat Lebanon Valley College, 13-9. Nicholas Fanelli scored six times and added an assist as the Eagles rallied from an early 5-3 deficit. Durning became the first player in program history to reach 400 ground balls in a career.

Lebanon Valley (4-5, 1-4 MAC Commonwealth) scored the first goal of the game and answered a Connor Killion tally with two more goals to lead 3-1 with two minutes to play in the opening quarter. Kyle Mulrane dodged and scored with a minute left to pull the Eagles to within striking distance at the quarter break. Though Nicholas Fanelli scored from Avery Porter on a man-up chance early in the second quarter, the Eagles gave up two straight goals and did not lead in the game until the final four seconds of the half. Kyle Fanelli scored with five minutes left.

The Dutchmen had the ball in an extended possession heading into the final minute, but the Eagles took advantage of a break when an LVC shot from a tight angle hit the crossbar. Nate Hawkins won the race to back up the shot on the sideline. His pass into the attack was deflected, but Durning, doing what he does, won the battle for the ball on the ground at the edge of the box. He then drew defensive pressure and flipped a pass to Nicholas Fanelli coming from behind the goal. Fanelli grabbed the pass and dunked in his second of the day to tie the game with 23 seconds in the half. Connor Gill scooped the ground ball on an Anthony Firmani faceoff win and Head Coach Kevin Wallace took a timeout to set up a play to finish. The Eagles got a match-up for Nicholas Fanelli, and the sophomore faked a top-side move and rolled back and converted a diving shot with four seconds left to send the Eagles to the locker room up 6-5 for the second game in a row.

The Eagles broke the game open in the third. Killion scored the first two goals of the second half. Mulrane set up the first of the two after a good ride by the Eastern defense forced a failed clear. After the Dutchmen got an Alex Kiviniemi goal to close the gap to 8-6, Killion answered in 30 seconds for a 9-6 lead. Nicholas Fanelli finished with a flag down and a minute left in the third for a 10-6 lead and added his fifth of the day early in the fourth. Durning picked up his second helper of the day on the play.

The Eagles final two goals of the day came on Fanelli-Fanelli combinations. Kyle found Nicholas for a man-up goal with ten minutes left, and Nicholas found Kyle for the final tally of the day. The two brothers have scored off the other's assist 12 times this year.

"We started slowly," Wallace admitted. "Some of that is coming in off what we had on the weekend. Their goalie played really well early on, and we had to adjust. Our ride and close defense both played well and that gave our offense a chance to get it done. Connor Killion had a great day, and obvioulsy Nicholas and Chris did as well. We have a week to rest and practice for our final three regular-season games."

Ethan Myers made nine stops to earn the win in goal. LVC goalie Nick Serrano made 22 saves. The eagles were 2-for-3 on man-up chances.

Durning breaks the career ground ball record set by Brian Miller in 2003. The only older record in Eastern program history is the single-season ground ball record set by Miller in 2002.

The Eagles will host Hood on Wednesday, April 21st, before traveling to Stevens Institute of Technology for a Friday night game.
