ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– With both teams having unexpected availability, Eastern University Men's Lacrosse welcomed fellow MAC Commonwealth newcomer York to Olson Field for an early-season test. The No. 6 Spartans (4-0) scored 10 goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half to break the game open and went on to claim a 19-6 win.
Though the field was fully saturated and there seemed to be no end in sight for the rain, the Eagles were able to control tempo and had the game where they wanted it for the first 10 minutes. York opened the scoring a minute in, but the Eagles responded with a stunning finish on the crease from
Nicholas Fanelli off a great catch and pass from
David Thomas. The Spartans went up 2-1 but
Connor Killion had an answer off a pass from
Kyle Fanelli.
The momentum of the game changed on the next faceoff. After a scrum at the x, the ball got kicked toward the edge of the box where Eastern attackers and York defenders waited for it to roll. The soggy turf absorbed the balls energy and it started to slow. As soon as the ball crossed the yellow restraining line for the Women's Lacrosse field, York Defenseman Ethan Greene scooped it and sprinted up field. The Eastern attackman waited at the blue restraining line and by the time he realized that the early release was not to be called, Greene was thundering into the attack. Gavin Dembeck to the pass from Green and finished it to start an 11-goal run.
York scored three times int he final three minutes of the first period and had all six goals in the second. Despite having only a slight 9-7 edge at the faceoff x, the Spartan defense put pressure on the hands of every player, and the Eagles were not able to maintain possession in the suboptimal playing conditions.
Killion and
Nicholas Fanelli each scored twice more in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the York lead. Dylan Wolf and Gavin Dembeck each scored four for the Spartans.
"We cannot expect success with the number of turnovers we had today," Head Coach
Kevin Wallace said, "It was good for us to get this game in now for some flexibility with rescheduling down the road, but I think it also shows us what we need to work on. We know they are going to get better as the season goes on too, but I think we can see what it will take to compete."
The Eagles will travel to Messiah for a 2:00 pm game this Saturday. The Falcons lost at Hood College this afternoon.
