Baseball Uses Big Inning to Salvage Split at LVC

ANNVILLE, Pa.– Behind an  eight-run second inning, Eastern University Baseball earned 13-3 win in the nightcap and salvaged a split at Lebanon Valley College. The Eagles (1-5, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) got quality starts from Tyler Bennett in a winning effort and from Mickey Foytik in a 3-0 loss in the first game

After getting blanked in the opener, the Eagles found their offense in the second inning of the second. Liam Clarke started the rally with a triple to right-center. Fellow senior Brad Clemons drove him home with an opposite-field single on a 3-1 count. The Eagles scored a second run on a wild pitch, but the rest of the damage in the inning came with two outs.

Shane Albertson reached on an error, and the Eagles took advantage of the extra out. Dave Hunsberger yanked a 1-2 pitch down the right-field line for his second career home run. Up 5-0, the Eagles restarted the rally against a relief pitcher. Matt McHale took a pitch off his leg, and Foytik walked. Clarke singled to right to drive in one and Clemens doubled to left to finish the 8-0 rally.

Clarke helped tack on two in the fourth. The senior first baseman drove in Foytik with a triple to left and came home to score on a Clemens ground out.

Lebanon Valley (6-4, 5-1 MAC Commonwealth) scored twice against Bennett in the bottom of the fourth, but Clarke and Clemes again provided an answer with two more two-out RBI's in a three-run fifth. Clarke singled to right to drive in Hunsberger and came home on a triple from Clemens. Shane Albertson scored the opening run in the inning on an error after Hunsberger singled.

Clemens finished the game a home-run short of the cycle with five RBI's. Clarke posted his third career four-hit game.

Tyler Bennett struck out two and walked three in four innings to pick up the win. Nick Kosenske allowed one run in two innings of work, and Riley Kiebach pitched a scoreless seventh.

The Eastern offense struggled against LVC starter Brendan Ward in the opener. No Eastern player reached second base in the game, and all three Eastern hits were two-out singles.

Foytik matched Ward pitch-for-pitch through the first four innings, but the Dutchmen used a walk and a pair of ground ball singles to strike for a run in the fifth inning. LVC scored two more in the sixth on three singles and a sacrifice fly. Steve Sattanino came on with two on and one out and escaped the jam with a double-play, but there would be no rally in the top of the seventh.

"Our offense has been struggling a little bit," Head Coach Scott Renauro said. " but our approaches game one were still good. We hit some balls hard that jus tdid not find gaps. That carried into game two.  We were able to get  into good hitting counts. Tyler threw well, but we also wanted to get a few other guys on the mound today so we can prepare for the weekend."

"David Hunsberger had a big home run," Renauro continued.  I was even more impressed later in the game when he smashed a ball on the ground up the middle. That told me we are close to clicking. Having him stay up the middle was a great thing to see."

The Eagles will host Widener University in MAC Commonwealth twin-bill this Saturday.
