Women's Hoops Beats FDU-Florham in Finale

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Basketball erased a four-point deficit in the final three and a half minutes to earn 63-59 win over the visiting FDU-Devils in the final game of the year for both squads. Jaelyn Harris hit three fourth-quarter 3-pointers including a deep shot from the right wing to put the Eagles up four. She finished with a team-high 15 in the win.

After leading by 32-23 at the half, the Eagles needed the dramatic finish after a rough start to the third quarter allowed the Devils to grab the lead. The Eagles scored the opening basket, of the third, but trailed 42-36 before Sara Haas stopped the FDU momentum with a steal and a score.

Even so, the Devils held a 54-50 with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. The Eagles started the rally by going inside. Kay Wulah scored back-to-back on strong moves in close to tie the game. Devil guard Jayda Bing, who led all scorers with 28, spilt a pair from the line to pull the guests to within one.

The Eastern lead looked tenuous when Jaelyn Harris missed a 3-pointer with less than two minutes to play, but the Eagles earned a stop and Wright secured her twelfth rebound of the game to get regain possession. Jaelyn Harris then converted a Da'Naziah Brown pass into a 3-pointer and a four-point lead.  The Eagles had to earn a couple more stops to secure the games and Wright closed out the scoring with a free throw.

Wright scored 14 points and added 12 boards for her second double-double of the year. Wulah added a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Brown, Kneis, MaryKate McLaughlin, and Naomi Harris each turned in valuable contributions in their final game. Kneis and Brown both had six points and Harris had seven. Brown finished with six rebounds and four assists.

For her career, Jaelyn Harris now has 143 made-3-pointers at the conclusion of her career. It is the seventh time in her career that she has made five or more long-range attempts in a game.

The match-up, one of five crossover games tonight in the MAC, pitted a pair of teams with a history father dramatic. Eastern's Women earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2015 at least partially on the strength of a dramatic overtime win over the top-ranked defending National Champions in St. Davids in February. The two teams split their games against each other in the last two seasons, but with Eastern leaving for the MAC Commonwealth, there is no guarantee the rivalry will continue.

For the host Eagles (1-8) the game got off to a terrific start as they hit their first four shots and jumped to a 10-0 lead. Mikayla Wright hit a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper and Viki Kneis scored inside before Jaelyn Harris capped the run with her first of five 3-pointers.

A Devil timeout slowed the momentum. Though Brown eventually hit her first of two 3-pointers to build a 13-5 lead, but the Eagles went cold over the final five minutes of the first quarter and the two teams went to the first break tied at 16-16.

Eastern held FDU-Florham to 3-of-12 shooting and only seven points in the second, but it could have been worse for the visitors.Their final hoop came on a buzzer-beater from well outside the 3-point line by Angela Downey.

Jade-Dee Tolentino scored 14 points for the Devils to join Bing in double-figures.
