Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Dominates in Home Opener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse (1-1) put together a complete performance in a dominating 18-3 home win over the visiting Delaware Valley Aggies. Nine different Eastern players scored goals, and the Eastern defense held Delaware Valley to only 14 shots through the first three quarters of the game. First year attackman Avery Porter finished with two goals and four assists to lead six Eagles who registered multi-point games.

The domination started at the faceoff X. With new rules requiring faceoff players to stand and play with a lacrosse grip, the game looks a little different. Patrick McClain took on a veritble host of Aggies and gave the Eagles a decided advantage at the X. While he finished 12-of-16, the Eagles quickly gained possession on immediate turnovers on the other two draws he took. His only pure losses on the day came on violations. Anthony Firmani, who for years has faced off with a knee down and a motercyle grip, won more than half of his draws as well.

With McClain winning at X, the Eastern offense was able to run at a rapidly tiring Aggie defense for the vast majority of the opening 50 minutes of the match.

The Eagles built a 5-0 lead before the Aggies found the cage with a minute left in the opening period. The Eagles then scored the next 13 goals on the way to an 18-1 lead. Nicholas Fanelli and Connor Killion both had hat tricks by halftime, and Nate Portrey had two of his three goals in the opening half hour. Kyle Mulrane put the Eagles up 10-1 with the final goal of the first half.

Eastern took advantage of their extra-man opportunities with four goals on five Aggie penalties.

The Eagles got two second-half goals from Kyle Fannelli and single goals from Porter, Adam Booz, Siam Owen, Mulrane, and Portrey,

Ethan Myers picked up the win in goal. Connor Evans and Kyle Dampman came on in relief. All three Eastern goalies made four stops and allowed on goal. Delaware Valley scored the final goal of the game with less than two seconds left.

Chris Durning finished the game with five caused turnovers and eight ground balls. Porter also had eight ground balls.

"We put it together today," Head Coach Kevin Wallace said, "We had pretty much everyone available for practice all week, and we were able to execute against their aggressiveness early. We played with confidence and that grew as the game went on. Our goalies played really well and we won faceoffs. We are hoping to build on this."

Eastern will open MAC Commonwealth play at home against host Hood College on Wednesday at 3:30.
