Late Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md.– Eastern University Women's Basketball cut a ten-point fourth-quarter deficit to a single point but were unable to draw closer in a 49-45 road loss to the Stevenson University Mustangs. Jaelyn Harris scored 13 of her game-high 15 points in the second half.

The Eagles held the host Mustangs to 2-of-13 shooting in the first quarter on the way to a 10-5 lead at the first break. Viki Kneis scored a pair of baskets in the frame and four different Eastern players scored.

The Mustangs started the second on a 7-0 run. Brynn Schmidt stopped the run with a put-back basket halfway through the half. The teams traded baskets over the last five minutes and Stevenson took a 22-20 lead to the locker room. Shmidt led the Eagles with six points on 3-of-4 shooting in the half. The Eagles made only 8-of-28 total field goals and were 0-for-11 from behind the arc. The Mustangs also made eight field goals and four free throws, but they made two shots from deep for the two-point lead.

Jaelyn Harris ended the Eagles' drought from deep with a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the half on a pass from Kneis. The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes of the half before Stevenson built a 36-30 cushion with a 9-0 run. Schmidt made a free throw in the final minute and found Kneis in transition to close the third within three points. Schmidt finished with seven points and a career-high five assists. The junior guard had three steals and just one turnover in a season-high 30 minutes.

Stevenson started the fourth on a 9-to-2 run to build a 45-35 lead with six and a half minutes left. Jaelyn Harris connected on her second 3-pointer of the game to spark a 10-to-1 run over a two-minute stretch. The junior guard made a pair of long-range efforts and scored eight points in the run.

The Eagles trailed 46-45 with over three minutes to play. The Eagles were unable to convert on any of their final offensive possessions and the Mustangs made three free throws in the last seven seconds for the final margin.

Wulah and Kneis each finished with eight points. Alexa Sanmartin led Stevenson with 12 points.

The Eagles will host the Mustangs in the return leg of the home and home tomorrow night. The program will honor its four seniors, Kneis, MaryKate McLaughlin, Da'Naziah Brown, and Naomi Harris before the game.
