ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Eastern University Men's Lacrosse held the lead three times early, but the host St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks scored the final six goals of the game to pull away to a 15-8 win.
Nicholas Fanelli led the Eagles with four goals.
How It Happened:
The Eagles (2-4) controlled the face-off x through he opening half and despite giving up two goals in the first three minutes led 4-3 with three minutes to play in the opening period. After the Seahawks tied the score to close the first quarter, Fanelli opened the second quarter. St. Mary's (5-1) equalized two minutes later before
Connor Killion gave the Eagles a 6-5 edge midway through the period.
St. Mary's scored the final three goals of the first half and would not trail again.
Both teams had 18 shots in the first half and the Eagles held a 9-6 edge in faceoffs.
The Eagles had a pair of man-up chances in the third period but could not convert. Twice in the third Eastern pulled to within a goal, but St. Mary's had the answer each time. Fanelli finished his fourth of the day from
Kyle Mulrane for the first goal of the second half.
Colin Piper scored Eastern's final goal with 2:23 left in the third.
The Seahawks scored immediately after the Piper goal and again with 17 seconds to play in the third quarter to take an 11-8 lead to the final fifteen minutes.
St. Mary's continued that run with four fourth-quarter goals to pull away.
