YORK, Pa.– After struggling on offense for the first 32 minutes of the game, Eastern University Women's Basketball used a 17-to-4 run to turn a 37-27 fourth quarter deficit into a 44-40 lead with two minutes to play in the team's final non-league match of the season at York College. The host Spartans rallied to force overtime and held off the Eagles by a 62-60 score.
How It Happened:
While neither team was terrific on the offensive end, the Eagles (5-6) shot only 17 percent from the floor in the first half and managed only 24 points through the first three quarters. The Spartans (7-6) stretched their lead to ten points with the final five points of the third quarter.
Jaelyn Harris opened the fourth with a 3-pointer, but the Spartans answered with a shot from deep and held a the ten-point edge with a little more than eight minutes to play. After a pair of free throws from
Minika Glenn,
Kay Wulah cut the York lead to five with a 3-pointer. Glenn eventually put the Eagles up 41-40 with a three-point play with three and a half minutes to play.
Naomi Harris stretched the Eastern lead to three points with a strong move to the basket and Wulah split a pair at the line to give the Eagles their biggest lead of the game.
The lead changed hands six times in the final two minutes of the game as neither team could find a stop down the stretch.
Jaelyn Harris hit a pair of clutch free throws to put the Eagles up 50-49 with 10 seconds left. The Spartans split a pair of free throws to tie the score and the Eagles were unable to find a game-winner on an inbounds play with three seconds left.
After scoring 24 points in the first three quarters, the Eagles outpaced York 26-16 in the fourth.
Jaelyn Harris hit a 3-pointer to start the overtime, but the Spartans again found an answer. After Glenn scored to put the Eagles up 55-53, the Spartans scored nine of the next 11 points for a five-point lead with a minute to play. Harris rimmed in her fifth 3-pointer of the game with 30 seconds left to close the gap to a basket and the Eagles had the ball with a chance to tie, but a pair of heavily-contested shots in close rimmed out and the Spartans were able to clear the final rebound for the 62-60 win.
Jaelyn Harris finished with a game-high 21 points. Glenn had 13 points and Wulah added 12 points and 14 rebounds. York, who will be a league opponent next year, had four players in double-figures. Kayla Ferris recorded a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Coach Houston Says:
"We needed to play with more urgency from the tip. We finished the game competing on both ends of the floor. This was a tough loss. We did not get a lot of breaks, but I think we know what we have moving forward. We need to prepare for a huge game to start the league season. We had a tough schedule for a reason, and I think we are prepared to compete and motivated going forward."
