Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Stopped by Washington College

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Soccer (2-2) made a push in the second half, but was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 3-0 home loss to Washington College (3-1). The Shoremen scored twice in a seventy second burst in the first half to rab control of the match.

How it Happened:
The Eagles had good possession early, but the Shoremen found their opening chance after winning an Eastern clearance near midfield. James Strine received a pass between the Eastern back row and midfield and turned. He slotted a ball into space for Greg Adams on the run. Anthony Hitchcock was off his line to close the angle, but Adams slotted home the finish in the 17th minute.

Moments later, a Shoreman throw deep in the Eastern end turned into another goal as three players hit volleys off the throw. The Shoremen held the 2-0 lead to intermission. They had a 6-3 edge in shots and a 3-1 edge in corners.

Down 2-, the Eagles pulled out the stops to start the second half. The aggressive posture opened the game but also left the Eagles a little exposed to counter-attacking chances.

Eastern's best chance of the match came on a great passing sequence in the 48th minute. Matthew Mitchell hit an 18-yard shot off the face of the crossbar that did not go in. Moments later, Reginald Lloyd made a series of moves on the right flank and drove a ball through traffic in front of the goal. No Eastern player was able to redirect the thigh-high serve, and the Shoremen held the 2-0 lead.

The decisive third goal of the match came in the 57th minute. This time, Adams found Strine on the run. Though the Eagles had better possession and more field position in the second half, they were only able to get two shots on target against the buttoned up Washington College defense.

Coach Payne Says:
"We lost to a very good Washington College team. I thought they were very deserving of the result. They won a lot of first balls, second balls, and 50/50 balls. They had three moments of quality."

"We have had two tough results in two days. Togetherness is important. How we act and respond when we lose is important. When you lose it really tests your character and culture. Hopefully we can be consistent and not be a team that is only good when we are winning."

"There were some good performances today. I thought Gabe Velazquez played very well in the minutes that he got in the game today. Matt Mitchell and Jake Sankey were strong but we expect that from them at this point."

"We will take a day off, watch film, train twice before we play Swarthmore. I think we continue to grow and get better during that time. Swarthmore will be another tough test for our team."
