Volleyball Beats Eastern Connecticut; Shelby Hits Milestone

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball hit .242 and beat the visiting Eastern Connecticut State Warriors (5-5) in three sets. With a match-high 12 kills, Caroline Shelby became the fourteenth Eastern University player to reach 1,000 career kills.

How It Happened:
The Eagles (7-6) took the lead for good on a Shelby kill to go up 6-5 in the first set. The junior outside hitter needed ten kills today to reach the milestone. She was dominant in the opening set with six terminations on 13 swings. She also picked up five digs. Eastern hit only .119 as a team in the opening set, but they had 17 digs to limit the Warriors' efficiency.

Eastern jumped to a 15-4 lead in the second set and never looked back, the drama of the set came after Shelby picked up her 999th career kill to put the Eagles up 21-10. She had a couple more swings in the set, but Lindsay Heisey put the final three balls down to end the set. Heisey had four of her eight kills in the seconds set. She hit .381 for the match.

Shelby picked up her milestone kill after hitting into the Eastern Connecticut block a pair of times early in the set. She tipped over the Warrior block to pull the Ealges to within a point at 6-5. The Eagles tied the match at 14-14 on Shelby's final kill of the match and took the lead for good on her service ace on the next play. Eastern scored 12 of the final 14 popints of the match with Shelby and Katie Stenby at the service line. Hannah Picconi and Ally Spillane ended the match with a block for a 25-16 win. 

Morgan Kline had 14 digs and 16 assists. Stenby finsihed with nine assists.

"Congratulations to Caroline on her 1000th career kill!  The team was really excited for her and she's had a great week leading up to it. It's an awesome accomplishment!
We were in a tough spot trying to rebound off such an emotional night last night. The girls played hard against Juniata and it was important, as we learn to improve, that our response to today's game was a focused one. In all, I'm happy about the effort and result."


Up Next:
The Eagles host the MIsericordia University Cougars in an important MAC Freedom test on Tuesday. The Cougars were the third seed in last year's MAC Freedom Tournament and had won 12 consecutive matches headed into this weekend.
