ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the visiting Alvernia University Golden Wolves (5-3). Alvernia scored twice in the first eight minutes of the match and held on for the win. Eastern had a 15-10 advantage in shots in the match.
How It Happened:
The Eagles (3-4) had a great chance in the opening minutes, but Alvernia goalie Emma Beamesderfer made a pair of saves and got some help behind her on another shot as Victoria Strasser stopped a shot from Lindsey Estep.
When the play moved to the other end, the Golden Wolves capitalized.
Kylie Troyer saved an initial attempt, but after a scrum the ball worked to the right side and Alvernia forward Morgan Mondeshein pushed it across the face of the goal where an open Felicia Getz knocked it home for her sixth of the year. Mondeshein made it 2-0 three minutes later when she pushed in her sixth goal of the season.
The Eagles had a pair of penalty corners in the first quarter and four more in the second quarter, but they were unable to to convert their opportunities into shots on goal.
Moments after halftime,
Abigail Geisler scored her sixth goal of the year to pull the Eagles to withing a goal with lots of time left.
Lily White crossed the ball in from the left side on the goal.
Despite having a decent percentage of the play, the Eagles were unable to find the equalizer
Joelle Wash had a pair of shots in the final minute.
Today was the 32nd meeting between the two programs and the 28th time the game has been a one or two-goal difference. Eastern leads the series 18-14, but Alvernia has now won the last four meetings. Eastern will move to the other side of the MAC next fall and Alvernia will again be a conference opponent.
Coach Azzarano Says:
"It was a frustrating day. We had breakdowns that cost us at both ends. Today was not our best day. We will move forward. Monday will be a fresh start. We will look to improve our level of focus and the type of teamwork we believe we can possess. When we find that focus, we will compete better against our opponents."
Up Next:
The Eagles have a midweek match on Wednesday at Elizabethtown. They will open the MAC Freedom schedule at home against Wilkes next Saturday at 11.
