HAVERFORD, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball saw an early 4-0 lead slip away but scored twice int he top of the tenth to earn a 6-4 win at Haverford College in the team's final non-league test of the year.
Steve Sattanino pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his fourth win of the year.
How It Happened:
After
Liam Clarke hit a one-out single in the top of the first,
Britton Lawrence turned on a pitch for his first home run of the year. The two-run shot to left put the Eagles up, but the rally did not end.
Mickey Foytik hit a 3-1 pitch through the left side and advanced to third on a ground out and a wild pitch.
Brady DiGiacomo hit a two-out single to plate Foytik and give the Eagles a 3-0 lead for starter
Nelson Ocasio.
Ocasio faced the minimum through the first two innings and worked around a one-out single in the third.
Luke Gruendl walked with one out in the fourth and moved to third on a
Kyle Daddario double to left. He scored on a ground ball to second by
Brad Clemens.
The host Fords (16-17) finally notched a run off Ocasio on a double and three walks in the fourth. The first-year right-hander avoided further damage with a fly ball to left and struck out two of the three hitters he faced in a scoreless fifth.
Shane Albertson came on in relief to start the sixth. While the Eagles were not adding on, Albertson pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh. The senior right-hander ran into trouble in the eighth. After a lead-off triple, the Eastern defense ran into problems and the Fords tied the game with a pair of unearned runs.
The Eagles put two on in the top of the ninth, but did not retake the lead. Sattanino came on to start the ninth. After conceding a lead-off single, the sophomore right-hander got a double play to get out of the jam.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the tenth on a
Britton Lawrence single and a pair of walks. After the Fords got an out at home, Gruendl walked on a full count to drive in what would be the winning run.
James Baker then got hit by a pitch to drive in an insurance run.
Sattanino struck out two in the bottom of the tenth to secure the win.
Coach Renauro Says:
"Nelson had an effective start today. He didn't have command of his offspeed early, but he figured it out into the second inning. He was able to get through early locating his fastball. We planned for him to go five today. Shane came in and threw all of his pitches for strikes. We didn't make the plays in the eighth inning.
"They threw a lot of pitchers that changed arm angles. That made it tough for our hitters to get into a rhythm. The guys stayed with it until the end and grinded out at bats."
Up Next:
The Eagles wrap up the year with a MAC Freedom series against King's. Eastern will travel to Wilkes-Barre on Friday and wrap up the year with a home doubleheader on Saturday.
