Pitching Lifts Baseball at Wesley

DOVER, Del. – Eastern University Baseball (12-19) picked up a 7-4 non-league win at Wesley College this afternoon. The Eastern bullpen allowed only a single run over 5.2 innings to preserve an early lead.

How It Happened:
The Eagles scored three runs on a pair of hits and two errors int he top of the first to jump out to an early lead. Thomas Aguila singled to start the inning and Mickey Foytik delivered a two-run single to cap the inning. Foytik finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBI's as the designated hitter.

The Wolverines scored a run on a strikeout in the bottom of the first. The damage could have been worse as Wesley had runners on the corners with one out, but Nelson Ocasio escaped with a strike-him-out-throw-him out double play to end the inning. Luke Gruendl made the throw to end the inning.

The Eagles struck for three more in the second. Gruendl, Shane Albertson, and Aguila each singled to load the bases. When Liam Clarke kept the line moving with a single to center, both Gruendl and Abertson scored on the play. Foytik picked up his third RBI of the day with a two-out single to drive in Aguila.

The Wolverines (2-22-1) scored single runs in the second and third and had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth when Nick Kosenske came on for Ocasio. The sophomore right-hander faced one hitter to get out of the jam with a 6-4-3 double-play.

The Eagles picked up their final run of the game in the top of the fourth on a double from Foytik.

Kosenske worked out of trouble in the fifth with the help of another good throw from Gruendl to catch a base-stealer and a double play to end the inning. He pitched a perfect sixth before giving way to Matt Bunjo for the seventh. Bunjo worked around a pair of ground ball singles in the seventh and a lead-off error in the eighth to keep the Wolverines at four runs. Shane Albertson came on to get the final three outs and earn the save.

Coach Renauro Says:
"Our pitchers did a great job today. Ocasio started out strong and scattered a few runs. Relievers did great filling up the zone and battling every pitch. Our hitter got off to a strong start with good approaches and hard-hit balls. Once we got the lead, I think we got complacent and put together fewer quality at bats down the stretch."
