Softball Tops Cobbers; Closes Trip With Split

KISSIMMEE, Fla.– Eastern University Softball closed our its spring break trip with a 6-5 win over the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers (5-3). The win gave the Eagles a split in two games on their final day in Florida. Lexi Evelyn struck out seven to pick up her second win in as many days.

How It Happened:
After dropping the morning game to Carthage, the Eagles needed a bounce-back effort in their second game against the Cobbers this week. The Minnesotans were guests on the scoreboard and jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of hits off Evelyn in the first inning. The Eagles rallied in the bottom of the second. Sabrina Thomas reached on a bunt single. She moved to second on a two-out single from Madeline Iswalt. After Maggie Fleming reached on an error, Rebecca Howard delivered a two-run single to tie the game. Sam Albertson drove in Fleming with a single.

After the Cobbers collected a single run in the third, the Eagles grabbed the lead for good on a double from Thomas. She drove in Taylor Crown with the hit, her first extra base knock of the year. With the 4-3 lead, the Eagles built another rally in the fourth. Emily Loomis drove in a run for a 5-3 lead and to force a pitching change. The Cobbers brought their top starter, who had won earlier in the day, into the game, and Crown doubled to drive in Loomis for what would prove to tbe the game-winning run.

Evelyn worked through the fifth and the sixth without much problem. She ran into some difficulty in the seventh. After a runner reached on an error to start the game, she retired the next two on fly balls. A single and then a pinch-hit double put the tying run on second with two outs. The runner stole third to increase the drama. Evelyn finished the game with a strikeout.

In game one, a four-run burst in the bottom of the fifth gave Carthage (4-3) the eight run lead they needed to end the game early. The Eagles found only two singles in the game.

Coach Birchmeier Says:
"We all made the adjustments we needed to when they switched to their ace. We got our bunts down, and we hit the ball hard. When they answered back with big hits we kept our cool, played our game, and pushed through as a unit. It was a big finish for Lexi."

"As for the trip and the team, they are finally starting to believe what we are capable of becoming. We are seeing the direct result of all our hard work. When we focused on the little things and the fundamentals we were solid and that's exactly what kept us in games. We won three games by being focused and executing throughout the game.  am loving having the chance to work with this group."

Up Next:
The Eagles are slated to play a doubleheader at Cabrini on Tuesday. While its not impossible that it will happen, its also quite likely that weather in Pennsylvania will not quite be right for that to happen. Schedule changes will be announced as they are known.
