ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Women's Lacrosse hosted the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners for the first match between the two programs. The Eagles were unable to slow down the unbeaten Mariners in a 20-2 loss.
How It Happened:
Though the Eagles managed to win several early draws, the aggressive USMMA defense forced turnovers and the the Mariners scored on nine of their first 12 shots on goal to build a 9-1 lead.
Meghan Kosmides scored her only goal of the day on a free position shot right at the midpoint of the half.
The Mariners (7-00 had a 24-7 edge in shots on the way to a 13-1 lead at the break.
Marcie Spencer made five of her six saves in the first half.
Mackenzie Dix scored the first goal of the second half, and the Eagles had more possession in the second half but were unable to break through with any kind of scoring runs. Eastern won six of the nine draw controls after the break and had a 12-11 edge for the game.
Jessie Wohner, Maddie Schmidt, and Meredith Willard each scored three times to lead USMMA.
Coach Campbell Says:
"We have been working on transitions, being big and creating ball movement in the attacking end. Our defense has been working our man to man defense and supporting around the eight. There was improvement in a lot of those areas, but we played a very talented team today. They were skilled and disciplined and waited for our breakdowns. We played longer possessions defending without the breakdowns, but if you play defense against a good team, they will create openings. They took advantage of them."
"We continue to be solid on draw controls, and we finished two of our eight-meter attempts, which I think will be important for us going forward."
