WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Eastern University Softball returned to action after a nine-day hiatus to open the MAC Freedom season at Wilkes University. The battled through a pair of tight games but came out on a the short end in both ends of the doubleheader. Wilkes took the opener, 5-2, and won the nightcap by a 4-1 score.
How It Happened:
Wilkes scored single runs in the first two innings of the opener and Wilkes used a pair of bunts and a stolen base to build a three run rally in the third to build an early 5-0 lead.
Lexi Evelyn allowed only two hits over the final four innings to hold the Colonels in place and give her squad a chance to rally.
The Eagles built their rally in the sixth. Sam Albertson walked and
Sabrina Thomas singled to right-center to put two runners on.
Taylor Crown doubled to score Albertson. Thomas came home when
Leah Lozzi reached on a one-out infield error. The Eagles loaded the bases on a
Sami Britton walk but were unable to score another run in the frame.
Rebecca Howard had a one-out single in the seventh, but the three-run deficit proved to be too great to overcome.
Britton took the circle for the second game. The first-year pitcher kept the Colonels from building a big inning, but WIlkes did get a pair in the second and two more in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead. She scattered seven hits over a complete-game effort.
Emily Loomis drove in Albertson from first with a two-out double in the fifth for Eastern's only run in the second game. The Eagles loaded the bases in the sixth, but could not plate another run.
Coach Birchmeier Says:
"I was really proud of the way we competed today. This group keeps getting better. We did the little things today. There are always things to improve on, but the difference between this team now and January 29 is night and day."
"The pitchers did amazing work to keep us in each game. If we string together a few more hits, we can win those games. Sabrina called a great game and kept the pitchers in it and kept the pace of the game up. Maddy Iswalt and Taylor had some big, timely hits for us."
Up Next:
"The Eagles are slated to play three road doubleheaders next week. After a non-league doubleheader at Ursinus on Tuesday, the Eagles will be the home team in league doubleheaders at Manhattanville and Misericordia.
