COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse dropped a 16-7 decision at No. 9 Ursinus College (6-0) in a non-league game Wednesday.
Trent Ashton had three goals and an assist in the loss.
How it Happened:
After the host Bears scored twice in the opening 67 seconds, the game settled down a bit and the Eagles held the Ursinus attack to only one more goal in the first quarter. The Eagles, however, were not able to finish chances in the first and trailed 3-0 despite firing 10 shots in the frame.
Trent put the Eagles on the board with a man-up goal from
Colin Piper early in the second, and
Matt Auletti pulled Eastern to within a goal with nine minutes left in the half, but the Ursinus offense found its rhythm again and struck for three goals in a three-minute burst.
Mark Buannic scored with six minutes to play in the half, but the Bears answered 90 seconds later. Ashton put away his second of the day to close the gap to 7-4 with four minutes to play in the half, but again, the Ursinus offense struck for three quick goals in the final two minutes of the half to lead 10-4 at the break.
Ursinus had a slim 27-24 edge in first-half shots, but their accurate shooting and a 12-to-4 edge on face-offs put them in command of the game. The Bears scored the first two goals of the second half to go up 12-4 with 11:13 on the clock.
Buannic, Ashton and
Drew Johnson scored second-half goals. Ursinus won 20-of-27 face-offs in the game.
Bobby McClure scored six goals for the Bears.
Coach Wallace Says:
"We did not win the face-off war, so it is difficult to get possessions. We forced some turnovers, but they have a very good offensive unit that capitalized on its chances. We had a lot of good looks at goal, but we did not finish at the rate we would need to against a team like that."
Up Next:
The Eagles will not get a break this weekend. They will host the No. 11 Gettysburg College Bullets in a 1:00 pm game on Olson Field.
