MADISON, N.J. – Eastern University Women's Basketball used balanced scoring and stingy defense to win at FDU-Florham for the first time.
Regie Robinson and
Minika Glenn each scored 13 points off the bench in the 57-46 win. The MAC Freedom win is the fourth-straight victory for the Eagles and their first in 14 attempts dating back to 2007 in Madison.
How it Happened:
The Eagles held the host Devils (7-15, 2-9 MAC Freedom) to only 3-of-20 shooting from the floor in the first quarter. The two teams were tied at 6-6 with six minutes to play before the Eagles closed out the frame on a 15-to-0 run. Robinson had seven points in the burst and Glenn had four.
Naomi Harris beat the buzzer on a run-out to cap the run.
Brianna Young-Harris delivered the long pass in time.
The Eastern lead grew to 29-7 on a pair of free throws by Glenn with four minutes to play in the half. The Eagles held the 33-13 lead at the break. FDU-Florham made only 6-of-37 shots from the floor in the half. The Eagles went 15-for-33 with nine offensive rebounds. Neither team hit from behind the arc in the defensive struggle.
The Devils began to scratch back in the third quarter. The Eagles defense remained stingy from the floor, but early fouls put FDU in the bonus and the Devils hit nine foul shots to pull within 16 points with ten minutes to play.
Still in foul trouble, the Eagles went scoreless for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Robinson snapped the scoreless string with a pair of free throws, and Glenn connected on a 3-pointer from the wing on a good kick-out pass from Robinson to push the Eastern lead to 53-42.
The Eastern defense avoided fouls and
Da'Naziah Brown and Robinson hit lay-ups as the teams traded baskets for the final margin.
Glenn and Brown each finished with double-doubles. Brown scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Glenn had 13 rebounds to go with her 13 points. The Eagles made only 9-of-31 shots from the floor in the second half, but they held the Devils to only 11-of-33 from the floor.
Jaelyn Harris finished with nine points.
Coach Houston says:
"It is another good team win. Our guards did a really good job on the boards and we were able to execute at the end to close it out. It was a big 3-pointer by Minika in the fourth quarter to seal the win. We are looking forward to this weekend against Manhattanville."
