ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball dropped a 57-33 decision to the visiting Haverford College Fords (3-1) in another defensive struggle. Though the Eagles held the Fords to 36 percent shooting, they were only able to connect on 20 percent of their shots from the field in the loss.
How It Happened:
The Fords have been a stingy team on defense all year. The visitors jumped to a 12-5 lead on the offensive efforts of senior guard Anna-Sophia Capizzi. The Fords' leading scorer hit 4-of-5 shots in the opening five minutes to put the Fords in the lead.
Jaelyn Harris made a lay-up on a good feed from
Da'Naziah Brown to close the gap to 12-7, but the Fords bumped the lead back up with a 3-pointer and held a 19-11 lead after one quarter. Brown had five points and two assists to lead the Eagles at the quarter mark.
Brown hit her second 3-pointer of the game midway through the second quarter to close the gap to 22-16, but the Fords held Eastern to only two made baskets in the second quarter and led 30-19 at halftime. Brown had ten of her team-best 13 points in the first half. The junior guard was 3-for-3 from the floor before the break, the rest of the squad hit only 3-for-24 (12.5%).
Even with the tough shooting, the Eagles only trailed by 11 at intermission. Capizzi had exceeded her average with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The Fords started the second half on a 7-to-0 run. The Eagles jumped back into the game for a brief moment on another 3-pointer from Brown and an inside basket from
Viki Kneis. While the Eastern defense did well to limit the Fords' effectiveness on offense, they were only able to score another single hoop in the quarter on a three-point play from Sarah Haas. Havrford held a 16 point lead after three quarters.
The Offensive woes continued for the Eagles in the fourth as they mustered only two field goals, a 3-pointer from
Jaelyn Harris and a lay-up in transition by
Minika Glenn.
Capizzi finished with 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Cortlyn Morris added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench. The rest of the Fords made only 3-of-28 shots from the floor, and combined for only 17 points, but that was more than enough to claim the win.
Kay Wulah and Kneis each grabbed seven rebounds.
