Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Settles for a Split at Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa.– Less than 13 hours after finishing a tough five-set loss at home to an excellent Stockton team, Eastern University Women's Volleyball was back on the court in Central Pennsylvania for a pair of matches at Lebanon Valley College. The Eagles dropped the 10 am match to the host Dutchmen in five sets but b ounced back to beat Moravian College in three sets.

How It Happened:
The Eagles hit .240 as a team in the win over Moravian. In the opening set, they built a 17-9 lead on a five-point run with Caroline Shelby at the service line. Cecilia Bauer served for an ace in a three-point run to build a 23-14 lead and the Eagles were able to side-out to a 25-16 opening set win.

Shelby started the second set with an ace and the Eagles built a 5-0 lead before the Greyhounds were able to earn a sideout. Eastern built the lead to 12-4 with points with Ashley Thorsted and Bauer at the line. That cushion proved to be important as Moravian put together several little runs bet was not able to take the lead. Shelby poinded out a kill to end to put the Eagles up 2-0 with a 25-22 win.

The Eagles never trailed in taking the third set, 25-18. Shelby had 17 kills on 32 swings. She picked up 12 digs and a pair of aces in the match. Katie Stenby had 14 digs and Bauer finished with 12 kills.

A slow start in the morning match put the Eagles down a set with a 25-23 loss in the opener. The Eagles took the next two sets 25-20 and 25-22, but the hosts built a 17-13 edge in the fourth set and were able to sideout and score a point on three occasions to claim a 25-19 win in the fourth.

LVC led 8-5 at the switch and pulled away to a 15-8 win the fifth. The Dutchmen (14-12) put down eight kills with no errors in the final set.

Shelby hit .347 with 21 kills and 13 digs in the match. Bauer had ten kills and 12 digs. Ally Spillane had 12 kills.

Coach Birtwistle says:
"Coming off a tough and long 5-set match last night, we struggled to get our energy and tempo where it needed to be. We pushed LVC to five but couldn't come away with the win. The energy picked up in our second match vs. Moravian and we were able to execute more efficiently on offense. Caroline and Ce both did a great job on the pin to keep Moravian off balance. It was good to end the day with a win after two, 5-set matches in a 12-hour turn around."

Up Next:
The Eagles are back in action for a final MAC Freedom regular season match-up against FDU-Florham on Wednesday evening. The program will honor seniors Morgan Kline, Katie Stenby, and Cecila Bauer before the match. Fans are urged to come in costume for the match.
