YORK, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Soccer went 8-0-1 in home games in 2017. When the York College coaching staff asked the Eastern staff to wear white for tonight's opener because of a delay in shipping, Eastern Head Coach
Jeremy Payne was more than happy to have his team in white. The Eagles made themselves feel at home with a hard-fought 1-0 win.
Cade Harmon converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute for his 11th career game-winning goal.
Moments that Mattered
Midway through the first half, the host Spartans had a pair of great chances. The first shot went off the post. jared Wisdom saved the rebound off the line to keep the game scoreless.
Jake Cahill dribbled past his mark into the box in the 34th minute. As he has done throughout his career, the senior defender changed directions toward goal and went down hard after getting fouled. Harmon converted the penalty.
Ben Lochstampfor closed down an angle quickly on a loose ball in the 40th minute. The senior goalkeeper sprawled to his left to turn away a strong shot by Michael Unis for his third save in a five-minute stretch.
Lochstampfor made a ten-bell save in 83rd minute off a well disguised left-footed effort from York's Isaiah Dorsy. After seeing limited time behind
Quentin Keibler over the last three years, Lochstampfor made seven stops, played well off his line and picked up a shutout in his first career start.
Coach Payne Says:
"We battled hard tonight. York's game plan and the old turf definitely made it hard on us. York is a good team and is going to win a lot of games this year. We are happy with the result. It is tough to go on the road and win."
"I thought it was a game that could have went either way. They had chances and so did we. Us going into half time up 1-0 definitely impacted both teams' game plans as York had to chase the game."
-- On the challenge of the season opener
"Cade Harmon stepped up and hit a good penalty kick with conviction. We knew that if we got a penalty kick, that he would be the one stepping up."
-- on the goal
"We quickly switched to three in the back as we thought their shape and two forwards were hard to deal with early. I thought we handled the adjustment well."
-- on adjustments his team needed to make
"Ben was great tonight. Very happy to see him have success and get this game under his belt. He deserved a moment like this. I am very happy for him. Alex McGlynn handled himself well at center back for 90 minutes against good forwards. Julio Ardon played good minutes off the bench and definitely helped settle the game with his quality."
--on players stepping in to big shoes
"We turn to Mt. Aloysius now. We learn and grow from the York game. We got a result but we know that we can get better. We will not let winning gloss over the things that we didn't do well. We will address the areas that we need to improve in over the next two days. We are excited to play at home and against a quality opponent."
