ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Softball picked up an 8-7 win over the visiting Wesley College Wolverines and missed a chance for a first doubleheader sweep of the year when game officials determined it was too dark to continue with the Eagles leading 10-4 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles scored four times in the second and the fourth in the opener and posted nine runs in the first in the nightcap.
The day had great significance for the Eastern team as they celebrated the life of former teammate Olivia Hefflinger Day who died in a car accident this past February. To honor the memory of their former teammate, the Eagles committed the day to organ donor awareness and held a brief ceremony between games. Hefflinger Day made the decision to become an organ donor. In the tragedy of her passing, five individuals received life-saving transplants and three more had restored sight.
The Eagles answered a second-inning Wesley run with four in the bottom of the inning. With one out,
Meghan Johnson walked to start the rally. She stole second and advanced to third on wild pitch.
Jess Snader sliced a single down the third base line to tie the game.
With the game tied, the Eagles continued to be aggressive on the bases. Snader stole second and third and scored on a hard single up the middle by rookie catcher
Sabrina Thomas.
Alyssa Bolger then connected on her second double of the game to knock in Thomas. The lead grew to 4-1 on a
Taylor Crown double to the fence. Crown finished game one 2-for-3.
Wesley scored three times off Johnson in the third to tie the game and three more times off
Lexi Evelyn to go up 7-4 in the fourth.
Crown started the rally in the fourth. She scored when
Emily Loomis hit a ball to the fence in left-center. Loomis was thrown out on the play, but the rally was on.
Grace Gonzalez delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-out single to drive in a pair. The eventual game-winner came home on a wild pitch.
Evelyn, who struggled in the fourth, allowed only two hits the rest of the way to close out the game.
The Eagles scored nine runs on six hits in the bottom of the first to put senior pitcher Melissa Quinn up big, but the game never reached a point where it could be called official. Crown, Bolger, and
Leah Lozzi each had two hits in the game.
"We are starting to see our offense come together," Head Coach
Claire Emplit said after the game."It is shame we did not have another 20 minutes of light.
The Eagles (6-19) will play at Moravian on Thursday.
