ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball wrapped up a successful week with a doubleheader split to claim the team's series with Delaware Valley. After dropping the opener 7-3, the Eastern offense came back to life with an 8-4 win in the nightcap.
Timmy Gorton had four hits to tie
Angelo Kelly for the program record with 197 in his career. Gorton had a homer, and two doubles in matching Kelly's milestone.
Christian Shissler picked up his third win of the year with a strong outing in game two. The rookie scattered four hits and struck out seven while allowing only two runs in six innings.
Tommy Strazza came on to work out of a jam in the seventh to earn the save.
"That's what we expect from Christian," Head Coach
Jed Morris said after the game. "He kept the ball down and worked from ahead most of the day." The Aggies had only three fly ball outs against Shissler.
The Eagles (10-15, 4-9 MAC Freedom) broke the game open with three-run innings in fifth and sixth. First year catcher
Jake Jones started the rally with a double to left in the fifth. After a walk and a ground out,
Kyle Daddario knocked in the go-ahead run with his third of four hits on the day. The junior first baseman completed the week with 14 hits and 12 RBI's to bump his average up to .468 for the year.
Liam Clarke then pulled a hit through the right side to to drive in another run. Clarke had RBI's in each of Eastern's scoring innings in the nightcap and finished with four hits and three RBI's.
"Liam has been really good with two strikes," Morris said. "With Kyle and Timmy as hot as they are in front of him, he is going to have some RBI chances. It was good to see him come through."
The damage could have been worse, but Delaware Valley left fielder Timmy Lallis made a remarkable diving catch in deep left center to rob
Freddy Yahn of an extra base hit that likely would have cleared the bases.
The Eagles scored the final run of the fifth on a ground ball to third. Shissler struck out a pair in the top of the sixth to bring the Eagles back up.
Zach Belansek started the rally with a one-out double. After Gorton popped out, Daddario doubled into the alley in left center to drive in Belansek. Clarke singled to drive in Daddario before
Brad Clemens moved Clarke to second with a single.
Jordan Laboy drove in the final run of the game with another single.
Britton Lawrence lined out to deep center to end the inning.
The Eagles had 12 hits in winning game two.
Eastern scored twice in the second inning to grab a lead in the opener, but the Aggies scored the next six runs of the game to grab control. Gorton homered in the fifth, but the solo shot was not enough to get the Eastern offense going in a significant way. The Eagles had nine hits in the loss, but they did not reach via walk and left nine on in the game.
Strazza allowed only one unearned run in three innings of relief in the opener to keep the game within reach.
The doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow has been pushed back to back to April 22nd because of weather.
