ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball put up three huge innings in running past Penn State Brandywine in a non-league game leading into a string of six league games in five days. Eastern scored six in the third, nine in the fifth, and seven in the sixth to pull away to the 22-7 win.
Jacob Breyer set the tone for the day with an aggressive start on the hill. The sophomore starter attacked the strike zone early on the way to four scoreless innings. He struck out five and allowed only three hits on the way to picking up his first collegiate win. With the heavy slate of league games on the Horizon, Breyer was limited to four innings in a game designated as a staff game.
The Eagles put the ball in play six times int he first two innings, but did not reach base. The six-run third started on a
Freddy Yahn pop fly in the infield that fell behind three defensive players for a single. Joe Poma and Zach Belansek walked to load the bases with one out.
With no where to put
Timmy Gorton, the Lions had to pitch to the Eastern catcher. Gorton came into today 2-for-2 with four RBI's in bases loaded situations. He came through again with a solid single to left-center to drive in two more. Gorton finished the day 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's. He is now nine hits short of
Angelo Kelly's program-record 197 hits.
The inning continued when
Kyle Daddario stroked a single to center to drive in two more runs. With a 3-for-5 performance today, Daddario has now reached base safely in 14 straight games. HIs batting average jumped to .409 for the year. In addition, to his work at the plate, the junior first baseman started double-plays in fifth and sixth innings to help his pitchers out of trouble.
Liam Clarke homered to center field to drive in the final two runs of the third inning. Clarke finished with three RBI's
The Lions scored a pair of runs off
Jay Crawford in the fifth to trim the Eastern lead to 6-2.
An early error in the bottom of the fifth, helped the Eagles to load the bases.
Britton Lawrence unloaded them with his first collegiate grand slam. He took a pitch over the outer half into the deepest part of The Yard in right-center. By the time the smoke had cleared the Eagles led 15-2 and the game was safe.
Jake Jones cracked an RBI double off the fence pinch-hitting for Gorton in the sixth. Daddario and Jorday Laboy also added a two-run doubles in the seven-run inning.

Jeffrey WIlliams,
Dominique Johnson, and
Nick Kosenske all saw action out of the Eastern bullpen. Kosenske struck out two of the four hitters he faced in a perfect 1.1 innings to close out the game.
