Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Rallies Past Ursinus

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse scored three times in a four minute stretch to erase an 8-7 fourth-quarter deficit and beat the visiting Ursinus College Bears, 10-9, in a non-conference game between local rivals. Sean Fechter led the way for the Eagles with four goals.

Things went as planned for the Eagles in the early going as they built a 7-3 lead with two minutes to play in the first half. Fechter had three of his goals in that early run, and the Eagles got single tallies from Jake Billera, Mark Buannic, Trent Ashton, and Hassan Mackey as they built the four goal edge. Mackey's goal, the last of the first half for the Eagles, came on a left-handed shot from distance that ticked the underside of the cross bar on the way into the goal.

All of this scoring came in spite of the Eagles being dominated at the faceoff X. Ursinus won 10-of-13 duals, and the Bears scored their first two goals directly off faceoffs. The Eagles were able to overcome the loss of possession with good defense and flawless clears. Eastern was 7-for-7 clearing in the first half and finished 16-of-17 for the game.

The Bears grabbed a little momentum with a 30th minute goal to close the gap to 7-4.

The third quarter was one the Eagles would like to forget. The Bears scored four times to grab the lead. The Eagles had five turnovers and no shots on goal in the period.

"I thought that fourth quarter might have been the end of us," Head Coach Kevin Wallace said after the game. "But we gathered ourselves and figured it out. I think our schedule has forced us to be tough, and we showed some good toughness to come back." The Eagles had played three teams in the top 20 in their first five games, and had been within a goal of two of them late in the game.

Today, the Eagles got the goals when they needed them. Trent Ashton scored his second of the day to tie the score at 8-8 with 8:22 to play. The freshman attack beat the Ursinus goalie and the shot clock for his second of the day and sixth of the season. Fechter then put the Eagles up with his fourth of the day on a low shot from the right alley. Fechter missed several games in the early part of the year with an injury he suffered in the opener. His presence in the midfield gives the Eagles more ability to score from distance.

The Bears won the ensuing faceoff, but Kadeem Colburn got the shaft of his stick on a Gerard Brown shot and Jameal Hadeed reacted well to the crazy bounce and beat the Ursinus attack to the spot to earn possession with less than five minutes to play. Billera then found Matt Auletti coming up from goal-line-extended on the right side. Auletti fired a bounce shot over the Ursinus goalie for a 10-8 lead with four minutes to play.

The Bears scored to close the gap, but the Eastern defense stood strong in front of Hadeed and did not allow another good chance the rest of the way. Hadeed finished with 12 saves. Cole Millard had a pair of caused turnovers, including one with less than a minute to play

Connor Lowry came on to take faceoffs int he second half, and the Eagles won 4-of-9 after the intermission.

"We just wanted to get the ball on the ground," Wallace said of his team's adjustments on the second half draws. We needed to get our wings involved, and Connor gave us a chance."

The Eagles (2-4) had not won against Ursinus since 2012, when they won by the same score in St. Davids. Eastern will play at St. Mary's College of Maryland next Tuesday.
