Women's Hoops Drops An OT Heartbreaker

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.– For the second time in three days, Eastern Women's Basketball was undone by an 11th hour 3-pointer at the Hoop MIA D3 Holiday Shootout. Today, the Eagles led the Case Western Reserve University for nearly the entire game, but CWRU's Kendall McConico banked in a 24-footer from the wing to tie the game at 88 with 1.9 seconds left in regulation. The Eagles fell behind early in overtime and fell 102-99.

The Eagles made an incredible 19-of-30 shots on the way to a 44-31 halftime lead. After the two teams traded points for much of the first quarter, Eastern (4-9) closed out the half on a 14-to-2 to break open a close game.

Regie Robinson, Eastern's lone senior had 15 first-half points, but she picked up her second foul late in the period. The Eagles were not in foul trouble in the first half, and the Spartans shot only four free throws through the first 20 minutes of action.

While the Spartans hit four 3-pointers in the half, they needed 15 shots to get those points. Da'Naziah Brown hit on both her first-half 3-pointers and had eight points at the break.

The Eagles kept their edge through the third period, but the Spartans (6-3) hit 10-of-11 foul shots in the frame and foul trouble began to take its toll on the Eastern rotation. Robinson played less than five minutes in the third foul after picking up her third. The Eagles took only four 3-pointers in the period but still scored 26 points by getting to the rim. Brown scored eight more points in the period.

CWRU's Hillary Hellman rolled in a jumper with less than two seconds to play to close the Eastern lead to 70-58 at the end of the period.

The fourth quarter, for the Eagles was a battle of attrition. Viki Kneis, Robinson, Brianna Young-Harris, and Naomi Harris all were playing with four fouls by the end of the period.

The Spartans hit 9-of-10 free throws in the period, but the Eagles held the lead throughout the period.

Jaelyn Harris answered a Hellman 3-pointer with one of her own to put the Eagles up 87-82 with just a little over a minute left in regulation. After an Abby Lawrence 3-pointer with 50 seconds left, Robinson split a pair of free throws to set up the final possession.

After a a miss on a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left, the Spartans were able to tie up a rebound to earn an extra possession without a shot clock. The Eagles defended the initial pass and forced the ball away from the likely shooters. McConico took the pass well outside the arc and her shot hit the glass and went straight in to tie the game. The Eagles had a play after a timeout, but Jaelyn Harris was not able to connect on a contested shot.

The Eagles fell behind early in overtime and were unable to retake the edge in the game. Four players fouled out in the overtime.

Robinson led six Eastern players in double figures with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Young-Harris also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jaelyn Harris finished with 15 points, and Naomi Harris had 12 points. Brown finished the game with 16 points and Kneis had 11 points.

Hellman led CWRU with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Kara Hageman had 21 points and nine rebounds. CWRU made 31-of-37 free throws in the game.

The Eagles are off until January 5 when they will play at Penn State Brandywine.
