ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Women's Basketball used a 23-1 fourth-quarter run to break open a close game in an 80-64 season-opening win over the visiting Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen (0-1). Senior forward
Regie Robinson picked up a huge double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead a balanced Eastern attack.
How It Happened:
The Eagles trailed by three at half and by as many as six in the third quarter before closing out the period on a 6-0 run to head to the fourth up 57-53.
Naomi Harris made a pair of free throws to start the burst.
Viki Kneis made a layup in traffic to put the Eagles up two and the squad finished the quarter on a fast break lay-up from
Bria Rivers on a nice pass from Kneis.
Brianna Young-Harris started the break with a strong rebound and good push on the dribble.
The Dutchmen scored the first seven points of the fourth to build a 60-57 edge.
The game changed in an instant. Robinson put back an offensive rebound for a a three-point play to tie the game. After a pair of free throws from
Jaelyn Harris, Robinson connected on a 3-pointer from the wing to put the Eagles up five.
The Eastern defensive pressure then took its toll on the guests. A steal from Young-Harris led to another pair of free throws from
Jaelyn Harris. DaNaziah Brown then put the Eagles up nine with a solo dribbling exhibition and lay-up that sent the crowd into a frenzy. The sophomore guard then stole a pss and fed
Jaelyn Harris for another bucket.
The Eastern lead grew to 15 before the Dutchmen managed to score on a free throw, and the Eagles led 80-61 with a little over two minutes to play. The 23-1 run took just a little over four and a half minutes.
Jaelyn Harris scored 19 in her debut. Kneis finished with 12 points and eight rebounds and Young-Harris, who was not expected to play after an injury in an exhibition contest at UMBC on Thursday, had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Coach Houston Says:
"That was a great team win. We wanted to put pressure on them and speed the game up. We put together stops in key moments and were able to build momentum. Reg stepped up and play a whale of a game. She let the game come to her, but when it did, she was ready. It was a great debut at home for Jae. She was big on the ball and she hit some really big shots."
"The was a team win. We hung in there when things were not going great in the first half and bounced back after they started the fourth on a little run. Each player did her job."
"I am very proud of the way we competed. I am looking forward to seeing this group grow and develop in its personality."
Up Next:
The Eagles are at Cabrini on Tuesday night. The Cavaliers won the season-opener at Eastern last year. That game is the first game of a doubleheader with the men. It is scheduled for a 6 pm start.
