ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern Unviersity Women's Soccer closed out the 2018 season with a 2-0 home win over the King's College Monarcgs (7-9, 3-4 MAC Freedom).
Nicole Weenink scored a pair of goals and Adrianna Rowalnds picked up her tenth career shutout in her final match as an Eagle. The Eagles (7-11-1, 3-3-1 MAC Freedom) had seen this game as a play in game for the MAC Freedom Tournament, but FDU-Florham upset Wilkes in Madison last night to eliminate the Eagles. The Monarchs, on the other hand, would have earned a spot with a win or a tie. The Eagles honored Rowlands and fellow seniro
Alondra Cervantes with a win in their final game.
How it Happened:
The weather was really bad.
Eastern started the match heading into a strong and steady wind with intervals of light rain interupted by periods of heavier rain. Despite the conditions, the Eagles were able to generate several good chances in the opening frame. The best of those came in the 18th minute on a well-weighted pass from
Amy Radcliffe after
Lydia Moody won the ball near midfield. Weenink received the ball on an angle run near the top of the box and ripped a right-footed shot that King's goalkeeper Tara Bender touched around the post for a corner kick. The Eagles had another chance on the ensuing corner, but the Monarchs cleared the ball from danger.
The Monarchs had the better chances and more possession over the final fifteen minuted ot the half, but the Eagles had survived the half into the wind at 0-0.
The Monarchs needed a tie to reach the MAC Freedom tournament. That result would become less likely when Weenink got on the end of a nice slip pass from
Casey Avello in the 50th minute. Weenink sliced a right-footed shot around Bender for her seventh of the year.
The Eagles then earned consecutive corners in the 67th minute. With subs getting ready to come on, Eastern knocked the first
Zoe Galvin serve off a King's player. The second Galvin serve fell to Radcliff in front of the goal. With a Monarcg defender in her way, the junior's first attempt never got off her foot. She pushed a pass central and Weenink knocked it home for her 15th career tally.
The Monarchs committed numbers forward, but the Eastern back row of
Emily Weaver, Carly Sitkowski, and
Alyssa Simpkins stayed strong, and Rowlands managed her box to limit the number of saves she would have to make. Rowlands finished with seven stops and the shutout.
Even with King's pushing forward, the final great chance of the match came on a Radcliffe header off the underside of the crossbar in the 90th minute.
Coach West Says:
"It was heartbreaking to not have a chance to try to play our way in today. I was really proud of the way we competed. Our back line was really good and we had postive offensive movements and were dangerous on our set piece chances. I am very grateful for what Adrianna and Alondra have meant to this program and am plaeased that we were able to play our best game in our last game."
Up Next:
Though the Eagles finished tied for fourth in the league, the tiebreaker is record against the league from the top down. When FDU-Florham whom Eastern tied, beat second-seeded Wilkes, the Devils secured that tiebreaker over Eastern. The Eastern roster features 21 players who are slated to return for 2019.
