ST. DAVIDS, Pa.–
Gina Miller scored a game-tying goal on a penalty corner in the 69th minute, but the visiting Rowan University Profs found the game-winner with 91 seconds left in the first overtime to beat Eastern University Field Hockey 2-1.
Eastern and Rowan have played in field hockey every year since 1999. While the Profs had the better of things in the early going, the home teams had won each of the last six games.
While neither team scored in the opening half, both teams had chances. The Profs had a pair of penalty corners, but the best chance of the half came on an
Alison Hoag redirection in the 21st minute. Rowan goalie Carly Demarco made a remarkable blocker save on a ball that seemed ticketed for the upper corner of the goal.
Rowan broke the tie in the 43rd minute on a scramble in front of the net. After
Nicole Berger turned away a shot from outside the circle several players battled for the rebound. Rowan forward Bridget Boyle gathered a tip from a teammate and pushed it home for her first of the year. Boyle led the Profs (1-2) with 17 goals last year.
As the clock wound toward zeroes it seemed as though one goal might be enough. The Eagles, however, earned the circle and forced a foul to set up their third penalty corner of the afternoon.
Maya Wales played the insert, and Miller, a senior midfielder, pushed the ball into the circle and smashed a low shot for her first tally of the year.
The Profs had much of the momentum for the early part of overtime, but Eastern weathered the storm and gathered momentum. Miller had a shot to win turned away by Demarco in the 80th minute.
With the field stretched and the teams playing with seven players, the Profs found space in transition. Myranda Christy earned the circle on the left side and played in front to Casey Wagner who made a move to beat a charging
Nicole Berger.
Berger finished with five saves. The senior goalie had some help as well as
Macey Talhelm and Miller each recorded defensive saves in the game.
"Our players showed a lot of grit today," Head Coach
Camrin Azzarano said after the game. "Berger was really good in goal again today, and I loved the heart we showed to find that late goal in the rain. Our leaders showed very well today."
The Eagles (1-2) will host local rival Haverford College on Saturday morning.
