LANCASTER, Pa.–
Cade Harmon tucked home a cross from
Jake Cahill in the seventh minute, and the defense did the rest as Eastern University Men's Soccer claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over California Lutheran in the second game of a season-opening tournament hosted by Franklin and Marshall College.
The Eagles limited the Kingsmen to a single shot on goal in the match as
Jadon Ramsing and
Jacob Myers continued their strong play in front of
Quentin Keibler. The Eastern goalkeeper made all the plays he needed to play, but the Eagles' ability to win the game in the air kept the Kingsmen away from danger.
Harmon's goal came on a serve from Cahill on the left flank. Head Coach
Jeremy Payne had been very pleased with Cahill's ventures into the attacking third in the team's opening match on Friday, and the junior defender curled a right-footed cross right in front of the California Lutheran goalkeeper where Harmon met the ball.
"It looked like it might have gone in anyway," Keibler said of the cross. "Those are tough for goalkeepers, you have to freeze on that hard-curling cross with a guy running in."
The Eagles had their next-best chance of the match early in the second half.
Sam Sutherland again provided the action. The first-year winger whipped a right-footed shot to the upper corner that Kingsman keeper Eduardo Garcia parried away to keep California Lutheran within a goal.
The lead stayed at one through the end of the match. The Kingsmen had a chance on a restart in the final minute, but Ramsing won the header and
Zach Harley cleared the ball from danger to preserve the win.
California Lutheran (1-1) beat Franklin and Marshall College on Friday.
Eastern (2-0) will host Catholic next Saturday.
