HOBOKEN, N.J.– Eastern Univeristy Volleyball bounced back after a tough Friday night loss to split a pair of games at the Stevens Institute of Technology Invitational on Saturday. The Eagles made quick work of the New York University Violets before falling in five sets to the No. 24 Christopher Newport Captains.
The Eagles served aggressively and put NYU on the defensive from the outset. The Eagles finished the match with nine aces. Though the team hit only .211 for the match, the result seemed to never be in doubt as the Eagles ran out to a 20-9 lead in the opening set before winning 25-13. The Violets closed the gap to 25-18 in the second before the Eagles closed out the match with a 25-13 win in the final set.
"When our passing is on," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said of the matches today, " we can terminate. We bounced back [from last night's five-set loss to Arcadia] and played much better today.
Kylie [McCusker] did a nice job running our offense. and Miranda [Kauffman] kept our back line organized."
McCusker had 32 assists on Eastern's 35 kills in the match.
The Eagles had a 2-1 lead against the Captains, but CNU claimed the fourth set, 25-20, and then controlled the fifth set to close the match. The Eagles played the weekend without two players,
Sarah Roberts and
Morgan Kline, who played a cortical role in their late season run to the Elite Eight last year.
Miranda Kauffman had a team-high 23 digs in the CNU match and McCusker had 45 assists
Caroline Shelby led the Eagles with 15 kills.
Morgan Shemonski added 11 and
Ally Spillane had 10.
The Eagles will play at home for the first time this fall when they host Misericordia University on Tuesday Night.
