Cold Bats Cost Softball at Alvernia

READING, Pa.– Eastern University Softball dropped a pair of run-shortened games on a cold and windy afternoon at Alvernia. The host Crusaders (14-10) scored in nine of the ten innings to win game one 12-4 and game two by an 11-3 score.

The Eagles took advantage of a pair of walks to score a pair of runs in the first inning of the opener.  Jess Snader drove the first run with a double, and the second scored on  a Kelsey Clever ground out. Alvernia, however, had the answer. They scored four runs on three hits and an error in th bottom of the inning.

Alyssa Bolger drove in a third Eastern run with a ground out in the second inning, but again, the Crusaders answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Alvernia scored twice in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth innings as well. The Eagles scored their final run of the game on a Snader ground out in the fifth.

Megan Johnson held the Crusaders without a run in the first inning of game two before the Eagles gave up multiple runs in each of the next four innings and trailed 9-0 before a three-run rally in the top of the fifth. Grace Gonzalez hit a bases-loaded double to drive in two and Snader added an RBI single.

The Crusaders plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. The Eagles (3-17) will travel to FDU-Florham tomorrow for  their 17th and 18th road games of the year.
