ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In the final non-league game of the regular season, Eastern University Men's Lacrosse (5-5) dropped a 10-5 decision to the No. 7 Dickinson College Red Devils (8-1). The Eagles had won three-straight games entering the game. The visiting Red Devils scored five-straight goals over a 20-minute stretch straddling the second period to break open the game.
The game could not have started worse for the Eagles. Dickinson won the first three faceoffs and scored on each possession. Three different Dickinson players scored in the first two minutes of the game.
Down 3-0, the Eagles did not panic. They picked up a break on a faceoff violation and capitalized shortly after when
Tim Lamb came from behind the cage and fired an overhand shot just below the crossbar to slow the Red Devil momentum. The Eagles took advantage of a turnover to gain another possession, and
Mark Buannic fired a high shot from close range to cut the deficit to 3-2 midway through the period.
At that point, the game slowed down. The Eagles fought off a one minute extra man opportunity and the Devils picked up an offside penalty with 15 seconds left on the extra-man chance. Eastern held the ball until
Sean Fechter came on to put the Eagles up a man. Fechter took a pass on his way to the goal and fired a shot for a chance to tie the game. Dickinson goalie Andrew Jones was equal to the task, and the Devils found their player coming out of the box in transition to grab a 4-2 lead and the momentum heading into the second quarter.
Dickinson scored twice in the second quarter and twice more in the opening minutes of the second half to lead 8-2. Lamb found
Jake Pousson on the doorstep to close the gap to 8-3 with nine minutes to play in the third, but Dickinson had more possession and kept the Eastern attack on the perimeter for the remainder of the period.
The two teams traded goals twice in the final period.
Bryan Goetz scored his 19th of the year after a strong dodge and a good move to free his left hand and
Matt Martin scored a man-up goal with less than three minutes to play.
Jameal Hadeed made 12 saves in goal for the Eagles, and Jones had seven stops for Dickinson. The Devils' Ryan Campbell won 13-of-18 faceoffs. Eastern had a 34-30 edge in total shots, but the Dickinson shooters put 22-of-30 shots on cage.
The Eagles now have three losses to teams ranked in the top 10. They will travel to Misericordia for the MAC Freedom opener on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
