Baseball Falls at Wesley

DOVER, Del.– Eastern University Baseball dropped a 9-6 decision at Wesley College today. The host Wolverines (8-2) scored multiple runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings erase an early 4-2 Eastern lead.

The Eagles (3-5) scored in five different innings but were unable to put together a big inning.

Perhaps the best indicator of the struggles to come came in the first inning. After Brady DiGiacomo was hit by a pitch and Angelo Kelly walked. Timmy Gorton lined into a triple play on a worst-case scenario hit-and-run play.

The Eagles scored single tallies in the second and third innings to grab a two-run lead, but the Wolverines scored twice in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

Eastern loaded the bases with one out in the fourth on hits from Freddy Yahn and Zach Belansek around a Joseph De Los Santos walk. The Eagles scored once on a Mac McGrath fielders choice and another run on two more walks, but the inning ended with the bases loaded.

Eastern starter Josh Freed gave up a pair of runs in the third but cruised through the fourth. The Eagles held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Wolverines tied the game with a one-out rally in the fifth, and then put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth and Joe Clancy came on in relief for Freed. The Wolverines scored a run on a bunt and another two on a double down the left field line.

The Eagles grabbed a run back on Kyle Daddario single to right in the seventh, but Yahn was cut down at the plate on the play to end the half inning with the Eagles down 7-5. Wesely scored twice more in the bottom of the seventh to stretch the lead further.

Angelo Kelly knocked in a run in the eighth, but the rally again ended with runners on second and third. After Matt Bunjo pitched through a scoreless eighth, the Eagles again put runners on in the ninth, but the rally ended with Daddario being thrown out at the plate on a Britton Lawrence double.

The Eagles, who have yet to play a home game, are scheduled to return to action tomorrow at Stevenson.
