Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Wins at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Eastern University Men's Lacrosse scored final three goals of the game to claim a hard-fought 9-7 win at Washington College. Bryan Goetz scored four times, and Tim Lamb added three as the Eagles handed the Shoremen (5-2) their second loss of the season.

The Eagles fell behind 2-0 before they had a possession. Ethan Joseph picked up a ground ball on the next faceoff, and the Eagles capitalized with a goal from Trevor Gallion a minute later. Jake Billera picked up the assist on the goal.

"Zach did a great job for us today," Head Coach Kevin Wallace said of his freshman faceoff man. "He did a good job keeping the ball alive and giving our wings a chance to fight. He won a huge one in the fourth period after we scored to go up a goal."

The Shoremen reclaimed their two-goal edge with just under six minutes to play in the first period. The Eagles again answered with a faceoff win and a goal. Gallion set up Goetz for the tally, but Washington College held a 3-2 lead after one quarter.

Goetz scored the first two goals in the second quarter. The first of those two came only 26 seconds into the period.

"Bryan did a good job recognizing when he had a match-up advantage today," Wallace added. "He was aggressive at the right times and as a team we recognized our opportunities."

Lamb had an assist on Goetz's third goal of the game. The Eagles went up 5-3 when Lamb fed Mark Buannic at the midpoint of the second period. The Shoremen answered with a man-up goal 15 seconds later.

The Eastern attack went quiet for the remainder of the half, but the Eastern defense stood strong and the Eagles held a 5-4  lead at the alf.

"Their attack has a lot of guys who can create chances," Wallace continued. "Our defensive key was to limit the number of times we had to slide. When they can force you to do that, they are very good. Our guys were able to handle their match-ups and limit the amount of sliding and switching we had to do."

The Shoremen were receiving votes in the most recent USILA Poll. Their only loss came to No. 1 Salisbury. Today's game appeared on the schedule after both teams had games canceled midweek. The last time the two programs met, Washington College beat Eastern in the first round of the 2014 Division III National Tournament.

The hosts scored the first tow goals of the second half to grab a 6-5 lead before Lamb leveled the score midway through the third. Washington College again grabbed a lead with 2:23 left in the third.

Brandon Callison picked up the ground ball on the ensuing faceoff, and Buannic found Lamb to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the final period.

The Eastern defense was the story in the fourth quarter. Jameal Hadeed made four of his 13 saves in the period and the Eagles kept the Shoremen off the board for the entire period. Wallace was pleased with his entire unit but pointed specifically to the play and leadership  of Nick Jinks. The senior defender was credited with four caused turnovers and four ground balls in the game.

Goetz put the Eagles up 8-7 with his 17th of the year with less than seven minutes to play. Lamb scored on another Billera assist with a minute left for the final margin.

The Eagles (3-4) are at Susquehanna on Wednesday afternoon.
