Men's Lacrosse Flies Past Seahawks

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse scored five first-period goals and held on to beat the visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks, 15-6. Senior midfielder Bryan Goetz and Mark Buannic each scored four times to lead the Eastern attack.

The Eagles built an early 5-0 lead in the game, but the Seahawks had chances. Eastern goalie Jameal Hadeed turned away the first eight shots the guests put on the cage. Hadeed made 19 stops to collect the win in goal.

Goetz put the Eagles on the board just over two minutes into the period after Jake Pousson dug out a ground ball at the edge of the crease and pitched the ball to Marc Buannic on the wing. Buannic skipped a pass across the front of the cage, and Goetz fired an overhand shot for his fourth tally of the year and first of the day. Three minutes later Goetz returned the favor and Buannic put away his first of the year. With six minutes left in the first, Tim Lamb tallied his first of three on the day on a nice roll-back move along the goal line.

The Eagles made it 4-0 on their first shot in a man-up situation. Buannic did the honors on a good skip-pass from Bryan Mizell. Goetz made it 5-0 on a strong dodge down the right alley with a minute to play int he period.

The Seahawks, who won 5-of-7 face offs in the first quarter, won the ensuing faceoff and were finally able to solve Hadeed with a low shot from the right alley. St. Mary's won 17-of-24 faceoffs in the game, but the Eagles countered by forcing 23 turnovers and getting 22 saves out of their goalkeepers.

Eastern outscored the Seahawks 3-1 in the second period on goals from Trevor Gallion, Lamb and Goetz. The Eagles had the ball for a final possession with a chance to go up 9-2, but Seahawk goalie Max Alderman made a great save on a low shot from Buannic as time expired.

Goetz and Lamb scored the first two goals of the second half before the Seahawks scored three-straight goals. The visitors won the ensuing faceoff and were in the midst of a good offensive set when Alex Becerra changed the momentum of the game with a tough challenge at the edge of the crease to jar a ball loose and a strong battle for a ground ball. Becerra won the ball from a pair of Seahawks and ran the clear himself.

Up 10-5, the Eagles slowed the pace for a bit and forced a shot clock. Tim Lamb put a shot on goal to give the Eagles more time, and nine seconds later Buannic put away his third of the day.

The Eagles scored teh first four goals of the fourth period. Ethan Joseph scored his first career goal with a nifty move from behind the cage. Zach Taylor then scored his first career goal with strong run down the right alley in transition. Sean Fechter found Pousson on the doorstep for a 14-5 lead before Buannic capped the scoring with his fourth of the day with four and a half minutes to play.

Austin Mutter made three saves in relief, but the Seahawks put away a man-up goal in the final minute for the final score.

Head Coach Kevin Wallace was pleased with his team's performance and felt that despite losing the faceoff battle that his team did well when the ball got on the ground. He was pleased to see his attack start to find a rhythm in advance of an important stretch of games.

The Eagles (1-1) will play at Haverford on Saturday and then will travel to Colorado to take on Augustana College (Ill.) and Colorado College in a pair of Spring Break games. Colorado College reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
