MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Eastern University Men's Basketball fell, 100-96, to Moravian College in a wild non-league game at the Third Annual Hoop MIA D3 Holiday Shootout. The Eagles trailed 72-57 at the midpoint of the second half, but a late rally forced the Greyhounds (7-2) to make their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the four-point win.
The Eagles (5-5), who are still adjusting to the loss of senior point guard
Anthony Concepcion, struggled out of the gate against the relentless Moravian pressure. The aptly named Greyhounds took advantage of 11 first-half turnovers and hit 12-of-18 3-pointers before the break to own a 52-44 lead at the break.
The Moravian lead was 16 with five minutes to play, but the Eastern offense came to life in the closing minutes to half that deficit. The Eagles made 51.9 percent of their shots in the half.
Early in the second half, the Eagles put together an 11-0 run to close the gap to 61-57 and had the ball, but a Moravian's Jimmy Murray made a steal and scored to start an 11-0 Moravian run. Murray led the Greyhounds with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
William Belt hit a 3-pointer from the corner to stop the Moravian run, and the Eagles started to chip away at the new 15-point deficit and they again cut the deficit to four when
Clifton Adams hit a tough 8-footer to make it 85-81 with three minutes left.
Murray again started a Moravian run. This time he scored the first four points of a 10-3 burst. Nicholas Casazza hit a pair of corner 3-pointers to put the Greyhounds up 95-84 with just over eighty seconds to play.
Austin Duncan hit a 3-pointer from the right side and Adams answered a Moravian free throw with a strong drive. The Eagles then got a steal and
Antonio Chapman hit a lay up after a missed 3-pointer and a Duncan offensive rebound. Chapman's final basket, a 3-pointer with five seconds left, cut the deficit to 99-96, but Murray hit the first of his two free throws to ice the game.
Chapman led five Eagles in double-figures with 25 points. The senior guard was 10-of-18 from the floor.
Darius Washington had 14 points, and
Gabe Perez scored 12. Adams and Victor Peña each had 10 points. Peña had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Adams' ten points is a career-high for the sophomore. He played a career-high 19 minutes in the game.
"This was a difficult team for us to play with the injury to Concepcion, Head Coach
Eric McNelley said after the game. "That being said we got better today. Chapman did a good job as the lead guard. He had a couple bad possessions and unnecessary turnovers but he will only get better with more reps. We never gave up. I am happy we competed for 40 minutes
The Eagles (5-5) will not have much time to recover. They will play Penn State Behrend at 10 am tomorrow in their final game of 2017.
