Men's Basketball Shoots Past Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Basketball shot 10-0f-22  from behind the arc in the first half and earned an 83-75 win at Haverford College (4-6). The Eagles, bouncing back after a marathon overtime win over Rowan last night, led by 29 points with six minutes to play.

"Our bigs had some heavy legs in the first half," Head Coach Eric McNelley said after the game. " Our shooters stepped up."  Darius Washington was 4-of-6, Antonio Chapman was 3-for-6, and Austin Duncan made 2-of-5. Duncan scored 12 of his game-high 16 points in the opening frame and Eastern led 40-24 at halftime.

While the Fords scored the first five points of the second half, the Eagles (5-4) responded and built the lead in steady fashion. Victor Peña, Jordan Johnson, and Gabe Perez combined for 18 points in the second half as the Eagles worked toward the inside after the break. Peña, who returned from injury with a monster performance last night,  was 4-of-5 from the floor and scored all nine of his points in the second half.

The Eastern lead reached 29 when Washington hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game to put the Eagles up 74-45 with 7:19 to play. Washington finished with 15 points. With the big lead on the second day of a back-to-back, the Eastern coaching staff elected to get rest for players over the final six minutes, and the host Fords put in a late run to close the gap.

"This was a good team win." McNelley said. "We were able to get some guys in heading to Miami and we were able to overcome some difficult challenges after a tough game last night. Darius had another seven rebound performance. This was important for us to build off the momentum of a really good win last night. We have two tough games in Miami heading into our league."

The Eagles will host the Third Annual Hoop MIA D3 Holiday Shootout and will play against Moravian College at 6:00 pm on Tuesday.
