Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Buries Gophers

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Basketball shot 54.8 percent from the floor and had 12 different players score in a 103-63 home win over the Goucher College Gophers (0-4). Antonio Chapman scored 16 points and Jordan Johnson added 15 to lead the Eastern attack.

The Eagles (2-2) came into the game with, Victor Peña, the team's most productive player thus far this season, sidelined with injury. In Peña's absence, the Eastern coaching staff hoped to get solid inside play from Johnson, Gabe Perez, and William Blet. Led by Johnson's ultra-efficient 15 points on seven shots, That trio combined for 35 points and 19 rebounds.

With Johnson and Chapman aggressive early, the Eagles led 12-2 three and a half minutes into the game. The Eagles broke the game open with an 11-0 over a two-minute stretch to pull out to a 23-6 lead. Blet opened the burst with a put-back hoop before the Eagles hit three-consecutive 3-pointers to close the run. Chapman hit the first and then Austin James buried two-straight on passes from Chapman and Blet. The Eagles finished with 26 assists, which is the most for the program since December of 2015. Anthony Concepcion led the way with seven assists.

When the Eagles started to sub, the efficient offense and attentive defense continued and the lead grew to 29 points with four minutes left to go in the first half. The Eagles held Goucher to 20 percent shooting and owned a 27-16 edge on the glass.

"It was a great team win today," Head Coach Eric McNelley said after the game. "We played without Vic tonight, and our rotation guys picked up the the slack. We wanted to be aggressive on the glass and establish the post early in the game, and we were able to do that thru Gabe and Jordan. With the inside game going, our shooters got some really good looks at the basket and we were able to stretch out their defense. "

The Eagles shot the ball even better int he second half. James, Austin Duncan, and Andrew Salazar each made two 3-pointers after the break, and Eastern was 8-of-16 as a team from behind the arc.

With the lead swelling to 46 points late in the half, the only question seemed to be if the Eagles would hit 100 and who would make the basket that would get them there. Khari Ghatson connected on his first career 3-pointer to put the Eagles up 101-61 with ninety seconds to play.

The Eagles have a tough weekend ahead. They will play at Morrisville State on Friday night and at Hamilton on Saturday. Morrisville State made the 2017 NCAA Tournament and Hamilton reached the playoffs in the always competitive NESCAC.
