LEHIGH, Pa. – Eastern University Men's Basketball played in a rare mid-season exhibition game at Division I Lehigh University.
Darius Washington scored a game-high 22 points, but the host Mountain Hawks shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away to a 95-70 win.
The Eagles scored the opening basket on a sharp pass from Victor Peña to
Gabe Perez and were tied 10-10 at the first media timeout. Lehigh took advantage of a couple transition opportunities to put together a 12-1 run and pull away to an 11-point lead before Washington connected on his first of five 3-pointers on the afternoon.
Lehigh built the lead to 45-29 at half and that differential remained for most of the second half as the Eagles used an inside-out approach to get good shots and score but could put together defensive stops against the sharp-shooting Division I opponent.
"We got better today," Head Coach
Eric McNelley said after the game. "Last night [against Neumann] we lost our focus and went away from our identity. Today we had good purpose with our offense and kept focus throughout. We got good shots and were able to get opportunities at the rim. I don't think we will see that kind of size on our schedule again, so If we can build on this, I believe we will find success."
Washington scored his 22 points on 13 shots from the floor. The junior guard was 5-of-9 from behind the arc. The Eagles made 13-of-33 3-pointers in the game and were 8-of-19 from behind the arc in the second half.
"We want to build for January and beyond," McNelley said. "I thought we kept our composure and competed. We can be a deep team that moves the ball well. Today was a good step forward for us."
Peña and Perez joined Washington in double figures with 13 points. Peña grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. James Karnik led six Mountain Hawks in double-figures with 15 points.
The Eagles (0-2) will play at Albright on Tuesday night. Lehigh (3-1) will play at the University of Southern California on Wednesday.
