DOYLESTOWN, Pa.–
Melanie Witter scored a pair of goals, and the Eastern defense kept the host Delaware Valley University Aggies from any serious chances in the second half as Eastern University Women's Soccer remained unbeaten in MAC Freedom Play.
Witter opened the scoring in the second minute on a individual effort in the box. The first-year forward picked up her fourth and fifth goals of the season.
After the goals, the Eagles seemed to settle into a comfortable pace, and the Aggies took advantage. The hosts earned a corner kick near the mid-point of the half. A strong serve found an open player in front for a free header to tie the match.
"I thought we lacked urgency in the first half," Head Coach
Brandon West said after the game. "Our speed of play was slow and we lacked the fight that we normally bring every game. I thought our second group brought good energy."
Eastern had a 4-2 edge in first-half shots.
The Eagles brought attacking commitment to start the second half.
Amy Radcliffe had a great chance drift just wide of the post on a
Nicole Weenink serve early in the frame, and the Eagles finally found the game-winner when
Courtney Davis carried the ball forward out of the back and slipped a pass inot the box for Witter.
Witter gathered the ball to the right of the goals and chopped it central before pushing in her second of the afternoon.
"We played with fight and discipline in the second half," West added. "We controlled the game and created chances. Melanie was composed in the box on the finishes." West was pleased that he was able to get rest for critical players ahead of next Tuesday's home match against Misericordia University.
Eastern had 15 shots and five corners in the second half.
Adrianna Rowlands made two saves to pick up the win in goal.
The Eagles (5-4-3) have won four 2-1 matches this fall. Eastern is 5-1-2 over the past eight matches. They will host Misericordia on Tueday. The Cougars won the MAC Freedom last fall.
