Volleyball Stops Pride

CHESTER, Pa. Eastern University Volleyball hit .443 over the final two sets and .372 for the match on the way to a convincing three-set win at Widener University. Michelle Paulsen recorded an impressive double-double in the match with 12 kills and ten blocks.

With solid net presence and effective serving, the Eagles controlled the match from the outset. After a stretch in the middle of the year, where the team had seven matches with double-digit service errors, the Eagles (17-9) have found consistency with their service game with a combination of aggressive serving with minimal errors.  Tonight was the eighth consecutive match with six or fewer service errors.

While the Eagles finished with only five aces, their serves limited options for the Widener offense, and the the block was able to take advantage of some of that predictability. Paulsen had a pair of solo blocks and combined on another eight. As important, the juniors presence at the net forced tips and rolls which led to easy offense in the second and third sets.

After winning the opening set 25-13, the Eagles hit .464 with 15 kills and only two errors to claim the second set by a 25-11 margin. After a couple missed plays early in the third set, the Eagles found their rhythm again and cruised to a 25-15 win in the final set.

Miranda Kauffman finished with five aces and Morgan Kline had 37 assists. Ally Spillane was the only other Eastern player with double-figure kills. She had ten.

The Eagles have the remainder of the weekend off and will play again at home against Delaware Valley on Wednesday night. The Eagles will honor seniors Kauffman and Morgan Shemonski, the team's two seniors, before the match.

The Eagles will also play at home next Friday and Saturday. Friday night will be a 'Dig Pink' event.
