ST. DAVIDS, Pa.–
Jacob Myers scored in the 20th minute off a feed from fellow junior
Jake Cahill, and Eastern University Men's Soccer earned a third consecutive shutout win in MAC Freedom play.
Quentin Keibler made three saves to pick up the shutout in goal.
The goal started on the right side of the field.
Sam Sutherland drove his defender deep before pulling the ball back to switch the point of attack through
Colin Furlong. Furlong swung the ball to the other side of the field. Cahill collected the pass and combined with
Billy Walenda on a give-and-go. Cahill took a touch to gather control before slicing a hard cross toward the near post. Myers met the ball and slipped a near-foot finish just inside the upright. The goal is the fifth of the year and the fourth in the last three games for the center back turned striker.
While the Eagles had most of the play in the first half, the Devils put together a little push late to give the Eastern team some cause for concern.
Jadon Ramsing and
Jake Sankey did their work in front of Keibler to keep the pressure from turning into dangerous chances and the Eagles held their lead heading into the break.
After the intermission, Ramsing nearly doubled the Eastern lead with a header off a Furlong cross that rang off the crossbar from close range.
Sean Dougherty also hit the crossbar on a header in the second half.
The second half moved in fits and starts as the two teams had numerous fouls, long throws, and free kicks. The Eagles worked to push the tempo of the game to create a second goal, but that tally was not to come.
"I thought we did some things well," Head Coach
Jeremy Payne said after the match. "We are a little spoiled with the goal in our last two games, but we had the early lead and I felt like we had the ball and chances." The Eagles had ten shots in the second half, but did not force either FDu goalkeeper to make a save.
It is the eighth shutout of the year for Keibler, and it sets up a huge game at King's College on Tuesday night. The Eagles (10-3, 3-1 MAC Freedom) trail only the Monarchs (9-3-1, 3-0 MAC Freedom) in the standings. King's plays at Delaware Valley this evening.
Eastern's match at King's will begin at 7:00 pm.
