ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a tough 3-2 home decision to the defending MAC Freedom Champion King's College Monarchs.
Maya Wales scored both goals for the Eagles off penalty corners.
The Eagles fell behind on a penalty corner goal early before drawing level on a perfectly executed corner in the 16th minute.
Alexis Gooch played the insert, and
Gina Miller fired a low shot to the left of the Monarch goalkeeper. Wales was in perfect position to tap the ball in for her sixth goal of the season.
The Eagles nearly grabbed the lead in the 29th minute on an
Alison Hoag shot on a penalty corner. Hoag beat the goalie with the shot from the top of the circle, but the King's post player made a perfect defensive save to deny the Eagles the lead.
The Monarchs pulled ahead on a transition goal in the waning seconds of the first half. Kelsey Gabrielle scored her second of the day after the Eagles had an extended possession in the Monarch end.
King's built the lead to 3-1 with a goal on a penalty corner eight minutes into the second half.
Eastern had several penalty corners throughout the second half, but the team was unable to close the gap until the final play of the match. Wales tipped in another Miller drive on a penalty corner after the final horn. Field Hockey plays out corners after time expires.
"We need to find the spark that ignites our capabilities," Head Coach
Camrin Azzarano said after the match. "It's there. Athleticism, skills, desire... for some reason we are suppressing our full potential and subsequently making critical errors."
The Eagles (4-10, 1-3 MAC Freedom) have a critical conference test at Misericordia on Wednesday.
