Field Hockey Stopped by Alvernia

ST. DAIVDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting Alvernia University Golden Wolves in a final non-league tune-up before a critical stretch of MAC Freedom matches. The Eagles had a 14-4 edge in penalty corners but only converted on one in the loss. 

The Golden Wolves took advantage of their first of two first-half penalty corners with a goal in the eighth minute. Malorie McCoy doubled the Alvernia lead in the 15th minute.

The Eagles grabbed a goal back after a series of penalty corners in the latter stages of the first half. Maya Wales put away the pass from Ali Balmer in the 30th minute for her fifth goal of the fall. The Eagles had two more penalty corners int he first half but were not able to finish either.

Alvernia built the lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 51st minute and threatened to increase the lead further with a flurry of five shots on goal in a two-minute stretch. Nicole Berger made five of her seven saves in that stretch.

Ali Hoag beat the Alvernia goalie with a shot off a corner in the 58th minute, but the Golden Wolves had a defender in place to block the ball off the goal line.

The Eagles (4-9) will host King's College on Saturday.
