Field Hockey Falls to Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Eastern University field hockey team suffered a 4-2 setback on Wednesday night against Haverford College. The Fords netted two goals in each half to secure the win, dropping the Eagles to 0-3 on the young season

Freshmen Marissa Laganas and Ali Balmer each tallied their first collegiate goals. Laganas' goal tied the game in the first half, and Balmer knotted the match at 2-2 in the second.

"Marissa and Ali are very aggressive and driven players," said coach Camrin Azzarano. "I am happy to see both of them get in the stat column."

After Haverford (2-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, Laganas pulled Eastern (0-3) even less than two minutes later. Alison Hoag fired a shot in on a net, but the Fords recorded a defensive save deflecting the ball back out in front of the cage where Laganas hammered home to tie the game at 1-1.

The Fords took the lead back midway through the first half capitalizing off a deflected shot in front of the net to go up 2-1. The Eagles kept the offensive attack up, tallying four shots over a four-minute span but couldn't find a way to pull even.

Balmer pulled Eastern even again in the 47th minute dribbling the ball right through the defense and finishing left post to make the score 2-2. However, two late goals by the Fords in the 66th and 69th minute secured the victory.

"We have a lot of talented players on our team," concluded Azzarano. "We need to make some adjustments to support our team play better going forward."

Overall, Eastern took 17 shots placing 12 of them on net and led the Fords in penalty corners 11-6. Nicole Berger recorded eight saves on the night, facing 17 shots.

Eastern will travel to Albright on September 10th for a 6 p.m. game.
