GLASSBORO, N.J. - Eastern Women's Volleyball completed the sweep of the Labor Day Invitational on Saturday. The Eagles defeated both Emmanuel College and host Rowan University by scores of 3-0.
Stephanie Elechko was spectacular in the early match totaling 26 kills while posting a hitting percentage of .765. The Eagles had a team hitting percentage of .303 as they rolled to a 25-14 victory over Emmanuel. Eastern found itself holding a slim 10-7 lead but went on a 15-7 to close out the set.
In the second set, Eastern (4-0) played even better totaling a team hitting percentage of .459 and 18 kills. Elechko led the Eagles with 12 kills including a stretch of four in a row and the set winner. After Emmanuel had cut the Eastern lead to just two, 12-10, the Eagles went on a 13-4 run to claim the set by a final score of 25-14.
Eastern rolled to a 25-10 victory in the decisive third set hitting an eye-popping .722 while holding Emmanuel to a hitting percentage of -.095. Eastern never trailed and used a 9-1 run to close out the match. Elechko tallied four of the final nine points for the Eagles and totaled six kills in the set.
Elechko led the Eagles with 26 kills on 34 total attacks and committed zero errors. As a team Eastern totaled 47 kills, hitting .455 in the match, and committed only seven errors.
In the second match of the day Eastern defeated Rowan by scores of 25-11, 25-11, and 25-9. The Eagles stifled the Rowan attack holding the Profs to a hitting percentage of -.114.
In the first set, Rowan pulled within one early to make the score 4-3. The Eagles were not intimidated, however, and went on a 6-0 run before tallying 15 of the final 23 points of the set. Eastern totaled 14 kills in the set while committing only four errors. Rowan pulled within one, 8-7, in the second set but the Eagles went on a 17-4 run to close out the set and earn the win. Part of that major scoring run was a 7-0 run sparked by two straight service aces from
Alicia Weigel.
The third and final set was no contest as Eastern jumped out to a 5-0 victory and never looked back. The Eagles had five multi-point runs in the set including another 5-0 run to stretch their lead to 13-2.
Michelle Paulsen tallied two kills in the final four points to help secure the win.
For their efforts throughout the tournament Elechko and
Morgan Kline were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Eastern will host Johns Hopkins and Neumann in a tri-match on September 10th starting at 10 AM.
