SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Eastern University women's soccer fell to host Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 3-0. The Garnets tallied two second-half goals to help secure the victory.
Both teams traded shots early on, but neither were able to get their chances on net until the 13th minute.
Emily Cole got a look but saw her shot denied by Swarthmore (2-0) goalkeeper Sydney Hunter.
The Garnets got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Eastern (0-2) had a chance to pull even midway through the first half but couldn't find the back of the net.
Ashley Zemeski had a header in the 29th minute that sailed wide while
Nicole Weenink had her shot saved in the 32nd minute.
"It took us a few minutes to get up to speed," said Head Coach
Dan Mouw. "Once we got ourselves into the game we were able to give a very good team battle."
In the second half, Swarthmore came out firing placing pressure on the Eastern defense. Sophomore goalkeeper
Adrianna Rowlands stood tall in the net for Eastern, facing six shots over a ten-minute span making two saves to keep the deficit to 1-0.
The Garnets tacked on two goals in the 68th and 71st minute to make the score 3-0.
Carli Sitkowski and Weenink had chances less than 15 seconds apart in the 77th minute, but both attempts were denied by keeper Amy Shmoys to preserve the shutout.
Overall Eastern took nine total shots placing five on net while Swarthmore took 24 with 11 on net. Rowlands finished the game with eight saves while Cole led the team with four total shots.
"We did a nice job getting the ball into Emily and Nicole and found our share of chances," concluded Mouw. "I was very pleased with the improvements we made in organization and communication."
Eastern will play rival Cabrini on September 7th at 6:30 PM.
