Women's Soccer Suffer Setback Against Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Eastern University women's soccer fell to Haverford College on Tuesday by the final score of 2-0. Adrianna Rowlands and Leah Lozzi combined to make ten saves in the loss.

"We battled for 90 minutes this afternoon," said Head Coach Dan Mouw. "I am proud of our effort today."

In the first half, Rowlands tallied four saves while facing nine shots by the Fords (3-1). Haverford netted two first half goals to secure the win scoring in the 17th and 33rd minute.

"The first goal came on a volley at the near post," stated Mouw. "Adrianna reacted well to get hands to the ball, but it just crept over the line. Their second goal was a ridiculous looping shot from 22 yards that slipped just under the bar and just inside the left upright."

The Eagles (1-4) had a few opportunities to get on the board in both the first and second half but were unable to take advantage. In the second minute, Emily Cole had a chance to give Eastern the lead but her shot whistled wide of the mark leaving the score level at 0-0. Trailing 1-0 Courtney Davis had an opportunity to pull Eastern even but saw her shot denied by Haverford goalkeeper Kathy Prescott.Cole had a chance again in the second but saw her header just miss on the back post leaving the score at 2-0.

"Our best chance of the match came on a nice combination early in the second half," continued Mouw. "Zoe Galvin played Nicole Weenink into space on the right side, who beat her defender and played a good cross to the back post. Em Cole beat her defender to the ball but her header missed by inches."

The Fords continued their offensive attack in the second half totaling 14 shots, but Lozzi stepped up holding Haverford scoreless making six saves. Lozzi was tested early and often in the second half but stood tall making back-to-back saves in the 57th and 58th minute. Late in the game, Haverford continued to look to extend its lead and ricocheted a shot off the crossbar which deflected out in front of the net. On the ensuing header, Lozzi denied the attempt to keep the score final at 2-0.

"Both our goalkeepers made good stops and did well managing their boxes," concluded Mouw. "We did not get the result we wanted, but I believe we are making good strides forward."

Overall, the Fords took 23 shots placing 12 on net while the Eagles took four. Haverford also held the edge in corner kicks 5-1.

Eastern travels to Messiah on September 15th for a 7 PM match.
